About Solar Panels
Solar PV systems work by capturing the sun’s energy and converting it into Green Electricity, which can be used for free in your home.
Solar Panels are made up of groups of mounted together Photovoltaic (PV) cells. The PV cells are made from layers of semi-conducting material that generate electricity across the cells when they are hit by light.
Most Solar PV systems consist of panels that can be placed on top of an existing roof.
As PV cells come in various different shapes and sizes, it is also possible to get solar tiles to replace existing roof tiles, although these are more expensive than panels and are not provided by EnergyLink.
The power of a Photovoltaic cell is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). The kWp is the rate at which the cell generates electricity in optimum conditions, in full direct sunlight during the Summer months.
Although the Photovoltaic Panels are more productive on longer sunnier days, they don’t need direct sunlight to work and will continue to generate electricity, albeit to a lesser extent, when it is cold and cloudy.
Home Solar Panels size and cost
Solar Panels for homes are typically between 2kWp and 4kWp in size. A 1kWp PV Solar system will require at least 8m2 of roof space available to situate the panels. If you wish to install a 2kWp system you will need 16m2 of roof space available and so on.
A typical 2kWp PV Solar system costs in the region of £5,000 to £8,000. However, through the Feed-in-Tariff payments, you should recover the cost of your system in around 11 years, giving you 10 years of pure profit thereafter.
Solar Panels for homes represent an excellent investment opportunity for you to earn a tax-free income over the 25 year lifespan, through the Feed-in Tariff, and to significantly cut your energy bills.
The Feed-in Tariff explained
There are no Grants for Solar Panels available, however previous Grants only helped with a percentage of the cost, whereas the Feed-in Tariff will recover the full cost of installation and more.
There are three ways to earn and save money from the PV Solar Feed-in Tariff, through the Generation Tariff, Export Tariff and Bill Savings.
The Generation Tariff pays you 21p for each unit, or kWh, of electricity that you produce, regardless of whether you use it, for 25 years.
The Export Tariff pays an additional 3.1p for each unit of electricity that you don’t use and is exported back to the national grid. This means that if you don’t use all the energy generated, you will still receive payments for it.
Substantial Bill Savings are to be had as the Green Energy that your Photovoltaic Panels generate can be used for free, reducing the need for you to buy it from the grid.
